Bee Viewing Blocks
If you want to watch your bees make progress building their nests, you can upgrade your regular bee blocks to our bee viewing blocks. These are the same size as our standard bee blocks, but come with a precision cut acrylic window that lets you remove the top of the block to see the nest progress without disturbing the delicate cell walls.
The acrylic that we use is exceptionally clear, will not yellow in the sun, and is 50x stronger than glass. This allows you to remove it to clean the blocks without worrying about it cracking in the process.
Each of our bee blocks is made from solid, untreated white oak and comes with two UV-resistant elastic bands for keeping it sealed shut. They are sold individually. You can read more about the thinking behind our nesting block design and how it protects from parasites here.
Easy to Maintain
The windows are laser cut to precisely 1/2" so that they fit tightly directly into the block without the need for adhesive or fasteners, and can be easily removed for cleaning.
As the blocks are used up and sealed off by the mother bees, you can set them aside outside in a safe location - even over winter - from birds and other animals. You can then order extra blocks to replace the ones that are used until the adult bees emerge the following season or season after. (Some nests stay dormant for one winter, while others are dormant for two.) We offer a range of sizes that appeal to different species and individuals.
Size Guide
You can see some of the bees and wasps that live in each size block in the Scopa Gallery, and find out which native bees are in your area, and what seasons they are active in. Although there are many species we do not currently have photos of yet, here is a rough guide of some of the bees and wasps you can expect to see. (For the scientists among you, apologies for mixing taxonomic ranks here - we've used the lowest we could identify.)
